Friday Form A Circle – Beltane Ritual

Beltane Ritual
Adapted from a Ritual found at
Lady Bridgte’s Wiccan Ways

Original written by Lady Bridget and Lady Therese 1997

Cleanse area with besom.
Cast the circle in your usual manner.
Cleanse and bless the participants in your usual manner.

(Please note – I have set up the circle with the associations I use. If you feel differently, if you follow generally accepted principles, you would then want to rearrange the directional/elemental associations to suit your belief system). Also, it seems a good place to note that I work with dragons whenever possible, and when I perform ritual, I call dragons for protection. Again, if this is not your path, and you aren’t familiar with dragon, you should probably replace the invocation of the dragons with whatever protective beings you work with regularly.

Invoke Dragons

East - Earth

All Hail to thee, Dragons of the East, keepers of the powers of earth. Guarding the womb of the Earth Mother, dark protectors of the new seed. The shelter of the stag and the new born fawn. Carpet of fallen leaves be our bed. The soil that is the flesh, the mountain that is the breast, and the earth that is the bone of the world. We call you now to aid us in our rites. So Mote It Be.

South - Fire

All Hail to thee, Dragons of the South, the powers of fire. Keepers of the spark of lust which leads to all Creation, the Sacred Fire of Life. Guarding the Flame of power, burning bright, giving guidance in the night. Love is the inner spark, the light that burns without flicker, the amber glow within. We call you now to aid us in our rites. So Mote It Be.

West - Water

All Hail to thee, Dragons of the West, Keepers of the powers of water. The tides of the ocean, where all life began, the rivers and streams that feed and nourish the earth. When we thirst, let your tears fall upon us as gentle rain. Thou art guardian to the dark sea from which all life comes, and unto which all life returns. We call you now to aid us in our rites. So Mote It Be.

North - Air

All Hail to thee, Dragons of the North, Keepers of the powers of air. Guardians of the gentle breezes that soften winter's chill and the cleansing force of the gale winds. Oh, ye of the South Wind, place of storms and breath of life. In the coolness of the breeze we hear your sighs, and in the rushing of the wind. We call you now to aid us in our rites. So Mote It Be.

(At this time the dragons have been called in and we now prepare to call upon the Gods and Goddesses. We have called upon a Goddess and God from each direction for this ritual.)

IInvoking the Goddesses and Gods

(face east)

Oh Father Gods of death and hunting, Cernunnos, Ra, and Herne. Even as you dwell within the temple of death, so you dwell within the Secret Seed, seed of the grain, seed of the flesh, hidden of the earth. For you are He who is the gatekeeper at the end of time, we hear the thunder of your hooves upon the shore. You are He whom all must face at the appointed hour, yet you are not to be feared, for you are father, brother, lover and son. We ask that you join us if for but a moment to witness our rites and bless your hidden children. Blessed Be.

(face south)

Oh Warrior Gods of protection and virility, Osiris, Llew, Pan. Oh laughing God of the greenwood, with your pipes and cloven hooves, shepherd of creatures free and wild. Beyond the doorway of time and out into the night, in search of mystery and the wonder of light. Crackling with energy under our skin, red lion roaring, pulses racing, we are open - Come in! Join us, if for but a moment, to witness our rites and bless your hidden children. Blessed Be.

(face west)

Oh, Goddesses of all beginnings, Cybele, Astarte, Yameya, Isis, be among us now in your aspect as Maiden of the Forest and Sea. The fair one who brings joy and new life to break the winter's stillness and silence. Oh virgin child of sunrise, wild mistress of the hunt, Artemis of the mountains, and Aphrodite of the oceans, we ask that you join us if for but a moment to witness our rites and bless your hidden children. Blessed Be.

(face north)

Oh Goddesses of nurturing and fulfillment, Bridget, Demeter, Cerridwen, Diana. In full knowledge of the seed that you bear, we await your life, your freedom, and your light, as part of all light that flows eternally. You, the mirror of the whole kindred, of star, of stone, and of greenwood tree. Turn life's great wheel and make us ever better from life to life to life. We ask that you join us if for but a moment to witness our rites and bless your hidden children. Blessed Be.

(At this time it is appropriate if you wish to do a maypole dance to go ahead to this section on erecting the pole and doing the dance. If the dance is to be done at another time, then go straight on to the lighting of the Bel fires.)

High Priestess - Before we begin this glorious age old dance of the maypole, it is customary to bless and consecrate both the pole, which is the representation of the God's regenerative life force, the phallus, and the earth, which represents the fertility of the Goddess, the vagina.

Consecrating the Earth

(dig the hole now if it is not already there.)
(pour a libation of oil or wine into the hole)

High Priestess: Earth Mother, may this offering prepare you to receive this symbol of your consort, our Lord.

Consecrating the Pole

(the men bring the pole in, marching in a rhythmic manner, two steps forward, and rock one step back, as is usual in a courtship! It is also appropriate for them to grunt. They turn the pole over to the High Priest)

High Priest: Blessed be this tree, vehicle of our Lord, which shall soon enter our Mother the Earth.

(at this time all ladies come forward and rub the oil all over the pole, chanting is appropriate, as are other more suggestive sounds! Each person then comes forward and ties a ribbon to the end of the pole, the color of the ribbon should have significance to the person. The pole is then erected into the earth, with as much flourish and noises as is deemed appropriate to those present.)

High Priestess: This is a time for joy and a time for sharing. The richness of the soil accepts the seed, and now is the time that seeds should be spilled. Togetherness brings joy and abundance fills the Earth. Let us celebrate the planting of abundance. All of you friends look upon the pole, seeing in your mind's eye the pure life force rising through it from the earth, blossoming overhead, and cascading down through us...flowing out from us to the Lady's world beyond...Look...and see Life!

(start the music, and dance the maypole! For directions, see the intro file)

(can now light the Bel fires)

High Priest- Now, as in ages past, it is the pleasure of the Lord who longs for the touch of His Lady, to light the Bel fire, as a signal to all, that this is the season of Beltane! Tis spring now, and the time for all of field and forest to be fertile!

(he lights the fire, and the High Priestess comes up to him holding a long green scarf)

High Priestess - Now, as in ages past, it is the pleasure of the Lady to arouse the passions of the Lord, to cause the sap in the trees to rise, to cause the very breath of the earth to sigh in anticipation!
(she teases him with the scarf)
Come, my Lord, and let us be together once again!

(she drops the scarf at his feet and quickly walks or runs away, not too fast. The HP picks up the scarf and follows her, she does not allow him to catch her too quickly, and if possible, other young ladies block his way. Finally after traversing the circle at least 3 times, he catches her and they kiss.)

(the HPS then hands the scarf to another young lady, who goes around the circle till she sees a man she likes, and drops the scarf at his feet, he then chases her in the same manner. This can go on as long as wanted.)

(Can do the Great Rite now, or after jumping the fire.)

High Priest - The Bel fires are a symbol also of purifying energy, and also the energy of the fertility of this season.

"Nine woods in the Bel fire go
Burn them fast and burn them slow"
Oak for the God
Birch for the Goddess
Fir for birth
Willow for death
Rowan for magic
Apple for love
Grapevine for joy
Hazel for wisdom
And Hawthorne for purity and for the May.

(at this time dance the spiral dance, chant, sing, and jump the fire.)

(can do the Great Rite now, if not done after the scarf chase.)

Thank The Gods & Goddesses

(face east)

Great Gods of Death and Hunting, Cernunnos, Ra, and Herne. Grant us the promise of renewal, that through death we are reborn. You reign supreme within your lands. Give us fair woodlands and green fields, blossoming orchards and ripening fruits. Your seed that is sown in spring will become the flower of the harvest. As Nature flourishes, so also do we. All upon the Earth is at one with the Divine Union, the fruit of magic. As you leave, fill our hearts with light and love. Blessed Be.

(face south)

Great Gods of protection and virility, Osiris, Llew, Pan. Grant us your determination and bravery. Prince of twilight, pearl grey warrior, with a silver foot, go silently as long as the moon shall rise and the star shall turn. For we are ever a star, to us is given the secret of the Winged Flame. Oh, keeper of the Sacred Forest, as you leave, fill our hearts with light and love. Blessed Be.

(face west)

Great Goddesses of all beginnings, Cybele, Astarte, Yameya, Isis. Grant that our beginnings be fertile and fruitful. The beauteous Sacred Queen in the full knowledge that times of joy shall return always, as lusty as before. Virgin Queen of the Sea, and of the desert, and rain, and of the deepest untouched forest. As you leave, fill our hearts with your light and love. Blessed Be.

(face north)

Great Goddesses of nurturing and fulfillment, Bridget, Demeter, Cerridwen, Diana. Grant us your patience and guiding wisdom. Both within and without, fill our souls with rebirth, that we may walk a little further, reach a little higher, that we may strive for the far horizon. Thou art the the cauldron of inspiration and the womb of the immortal mother, and as you leave, fill our hearts with light and love. Blessed Be.

(We have a simple prayer at this point which states that we have honored the Great Ones, your group can do something similar here, or skip right to dismissing the quarters.)

Dismissing The Dragons

East - Earth

Hail to thee, Dragons of the North, Keepers of the powers of earth. We thank thee for the stability in our lives which grounds us and gives us strength. Rock of life, salt and granite, ever-living, blessed planet, green grass, and leafy tree, vines as trailing hair, may you bring peace back in to the world. We bid thee Hail and Farewell, as you depart to your mighty realms, and harm ye none on your way. So Mote It Be.

South - Fire

Hail to thee, Dragons of the South, Keepers of the powers of fire. We thank thee for the flame of passion, and the cleansing Balefire. Blessed warmth give comfort and brightness and strength. Though these flames of the material world be darkened, they shall ever burn in the worlds beyond. We bid thee Hail and Farewell, as ye depart to your mighty realms, and harm ye none on your way. So Mote It Be.

West - Water

Hail to thee Dragons of the West, Keepers of the powers of water. We thank thee for the life- giving nourishment you have given to Mother Earth and the crops. Soft is the rain that gently falls upon the fields beneath, it patters down so gently that it hardly bends a leaf. We bid thee Hail and Farewell, as you depart to your mighty realms, and harm ye none on your way. So Mote It Be.

North - Air

Hail to thee, Dragons of the North, Keepers of the powers of air. We thank thee for life-giving breath, and the wings of our thoughts, wishes, and dreams. As you blow the staleness of winter away, help us fill our lungs with the freshness of clear skies and clear minds. We bid thee hail and Farewell, as ye depart to your mighty realms, and harm ye none on your way. So Mote It Be.

Open the circle.

Saturday Surprise - Dragon Information

Intro to Dragons

Everybody knows what a dragon is: an enormous, fierce, bloodthirsty creature appearing in fairy tales and legends as an accessory whose main function is to set off the bravery of the knight challenging him. The dragon is an obscure, mysterious character, described in broad terms, and is little more than foil to enhance the hero's valor.

Dragon is a legendary beast in the folklore of many European and Asian cultures. Legends describe dragons as large, lizardlike creatures that breathe fire and have a long, scaly tail. In Europe, dragons are traditionally portrayed as ferocious beasts that represent the evils fought by human beings. But in Asia, especially in China and Japan, the animals are generally considered friendly creatures that ensure good luck and wealth. According to some medieval legends, dragons lived in wild, remote regions of the world. The dragons guarded treasures in their dens, and a person who killed one supposedly gained its wealth. The English epic hero Beowulf died in a fight with a treasure-guarding dragon. In China, the traditional New Year's Day parade includes a group of people who wind through the street wearing a large dragon costume. The dragon's image, according to an ancient Chinese belief, prevents evil spirits from spoiling the new year. Another traditional Chinese belief is that certain dragons have the power to control the rainfall needed for each year's harvest.

However the dragon is something else. He is admirable, intelligent and educated creature, who leads a most interesting life. He has some fascinating characteristics in addition to those occasional glimpses we are given through fairy tale and legends.
In the world of fantastic animals, the dragon is unique. No other creature has appeared in such a rich variety of forms. It is as though there was once a whole family of different dragon species that really existed, before they mysteriously became extinct. Indeed, as recently as the seventeenth century, scholars wrote of dragons as though they were scientific facts, their anatomy and natural history being recorded in painstaking detail.

The naturalist Edward Topsell, for instance, writing in 1608, considered them to be reptilian and closely related to serpents:

"There are diverse sorts of dragons, distinguished partly by countries, partly by their quantity and magnitude, and partly by the different form of their external parts."

Personifications of malevolence of beneficence, paganism or purity, death and devastation, life and fertility, good or evil. All these varied, contradictory concepts are embodied and embedded within that single magical word.

The dragon has always been slandered and misjudged, persecuted and hounded by man, simply because they are different. Like so many other living beings, he has experienced death and persecution in the name of so-called superiority of civilized man. Perhaps, in the future, man will learn with the death of a single animal or plant species an irreplaceable asset - something more precious than all the wealth in the world - is lost. Only then will the Earth continue to be a brilliant blue jewel in the universe, for in i’ts heart will be locked the priceless treasure of the diversity of the species, and man will have recognized his duty to cherish every single one.

Our dragon populations have declined considerably in recent years. Not only have dragons been excluded from all neighborhoods and driven out of most states, but they are hated almost everywhere. This is usually due to the prejudice of humans, because of a dragon’s appearance and culture. This does not mean to say that no one is willing to join the fight for dragons rights. Recently there has been evidence of an increasing public tolerance of dragons. People are realizing the importance of dragons in the preservation of worldwide ecosystems and the protection of our faunal diversity represented my these magical beasts. Although dragons have little reason to believe in us, the least we can do is believe in them.

Dragons are one of the greatest of the otherworldly creatures. Although many people think they live only in books and myths, but in the spirit realm they are very real. There are many different kinds of dragons including Green, Blue, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Red, and others. Dragons can also come to the physical world in the form of vast fields of energies, apparitions, and in some rare cases they even mundane creatures. Not only are there different kinds of dragons, but there are dragonlike creatures. They include but are not limited to Draconcats, Dracondogs, and other dragon related creatures. Although these creatures technically aren't dragons, they are the closest related creatures and sometimes even pack together with them.

If you happen to sense a large energy field, chances are its a dragon. They are attracted by people with compatible virtues such as honor, sincerity, and courage. They also like people who are very interested and dedicated to dragons. There are even people who practice Dragon Magic, which is its own deified religion. Try talking to them if you sense them. If you can't speak out loud then try doing it to somewhat of an effect of telepathy. Although it takes practice to contact other people with telepathy, otherworldy creatures can be contacted with much ease

The Truth About Dragons

Despite popular belief, Dragons are not mean, evil, damsel eating monsters whose only purpose is to ravage villages and hoard gold. They are wise, ancient, and usually kind. Dragons do, however, avoid negative humans who might hurt or try to control them. If a human does try to hurt or control a dragon, they will  wish they hadn't! If you try to hurt or control a dragon, there are great consequences. The most drastic of these is death, although it is rare, for most Dragons do not wish to kill or harm other beings.

Dragon Magic is not for beginners, and most certainly isn't for dabblers. Only those who are most sincere in their work with Dragons will succeed. Dabblers and those who are not sincere will suffer the consequences listed above. I hope that your experience with Dragon Magic is enlightening and delightful!

Friday Form A Circle - Dragon Protection

If you aren't comfortable or familiar with working with dragons, I wouldn't recommend this as your first attempt. Dragons are sentient beings, and are not something to be "controlled" but rather creatures you should work in partnership with. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you think you are in control of a dragon DON'T BELIEVE IT! Dragons CANNOT be controlled - they may allow you to think you're in control, but I promise you, you are not. Dragons are also not something to toy with. If Magic is a game or "something cool" to you, don't bother dragons. They are very perceptive - some say they can read minds, and will know if you are "playing" - it's a good bet they won't be happy about it. Just a little bit of advice...
Sometimes it becomes necessary to cleanse and seal where you live. This ritual can help cleanse the place of bad vibrations and other things. But before you cleanse your house because you think your being haunted by Jack the Ripper (by the way, it is very rare that demons and other bad things are going to just show up in your house and start doing bad things, so, don't get too carried away), think if there is anything going on in the house right now that could be causing bad vibrations. Maybe your house is just very stressful. Before you get rid of anything, see if there are any guilty feelings, and get rid of them. Uncover and purge all deeply felt emotions. This alone can get rid of whatever bad feelings you might have (another note, it usually isn't a ghost in your house, just bad feelings. I have a room in my house that I can't go in without feeling angry. It's just that the people who live there fill the room with bad emotions. That is what cleansing rituals are usually for, getting rid of bad emotions).
This ritual is also good for cleaning your ritual space the first time you use it. This ritual can be performed at any time. If you work alone, set all of your supplies on a tray to carry them around.
Supplies needed:
  • The pentacle
  • water chalice with fresh water
  • dish of salt
  • black (left) and white(right) altar candles
  • dagger
  • incense burner
  • an appropriate binding or cleansing incense***
  • bell.
Go to your altar and call all your dragons to help you. Light the altar candles. Set the chalice on the pentacle with the salt dish beside it. Light the incense, with plenty of additional incense available in case it is needed-which it will be as you go through the house.
Stand for a moments communing with the dragons. You do not have to know precisely what is causing your problems. Say:
"O great dragons, wondrous, wise,
Powers of Water, Earth, Fire, and Skies
Light and Darkness, join me here
To sweep this space all clean and clear.
Away with evil, in with right,
Dragons of Darkness and of Light.
Elementals, strong and old,
Restore the balance, dragons bold."
Plunge your dagger into the dish of salt, then into the chalice of water.
" As salt dissolves in water, so shall the hold of all negatives on my person or property dissolve."
Using the tip of your dagger blade, put three small piles of salt in the water. Stir it three times clockwise (remember to carefully clean the blade after, or it will rust). Now place the bell, chalice of salt water, dagger, and burning incense on the tray.
Begin the ritual in the room you are in, and begin your circling of the room at the door, moving clockwise. First carry the incense around, then draw a banishing pentagram at each window, door, and mirror (a banishing pentagram is a star. Start at the top and draw the star counter-clockwise). Next, ring the bell before each window, door, and mirror, then each side of the opening is marked with an X by the forefinger of the power hand dipped in saltwater.
Move onto the other rooms you wish to cleanse. You should try to end at a door leading outside, because you are pushing all of the bad energy out of your house when you do this ritual. When you are finished with that room, open the door and yell "Be gone!" and quickly shut the door and seal it with an X and banishing pentagram (hopefully no one will be standing right outside your door). Don't forget to do the basement too, since it is so close to the earth, it is a place where some entities can hide from banishment. Immediately pour the saltwater down the drain or in a stream moving away from you and clean the chalice. Take all of your equipment back to the altar and stoke up the incense again. Using your hands, pull the smoke over your body until you feel a lightness of spirit. Call your guardian dragons, and with great love and friendship, ask their aid in protecting you and your property and loved ones. Be sure to include the names of any pets you have. Spend some time singing or dancing with them. Your house should feel empty now, but you want to fill it with good things so that bad things can't fill up the space.
Project very positive vibrations while you say:
"Light calls to light.
Only those of light may enter here.
The way is barred to all who wish me harm.
I give my greeting only to the light."
Soon you will feel the great adult dragons returning to your ritual area. Greet them with dignity and thanks for helping you. Listen closely if they have any suggestions on the problem's cause and further preventions. When the dragons have finished their communications, thank them again and finish by saying:
"Farewell to you, O dragons fair,
Fire, Water, Earth, and Air.
Together we make magic well
By power deep and dragons spell.
In peace go now. Return once more
To teach me magic and ancient lore.
Draconis! Draconis! Draconis!"
Put more incense on the burner as a thank you and extinguish the candles.
Ritual found at: Amethyst's Wicca
Incense ingredients/instructions found at: Full Moon Magic
***Here are the ingredients/necessary herbs to make a "house cleansing" incense:
  • Frankincense 3
  • Dragons Blood Resin 2
  • Myrrh Resin 1
  • Sandalwood 1
  • Wood Betony 1
  • Dill Seed 1/2
  • Rose Geranium Oil few drops
If you follow the link above, you will find instructions on how to make your own incense. Can you buy it? Sure, but remember, when something is "created" it is imbued with the energy of the maker - that means if you buy incense rather than make it, it will be imbued with someone else's energy, not yours. I guess it's just a matter of how strong you want your magic to be. If it is diluted with someone else's energy, it is naturally going to be somewhat diluted.

Friday Form A Circle - Yule Ritual (Yes, I know it's still a ways away...)

This is the ritual our "group" performed for Yule 2005. We always tried to create rituals that allowed everyone to participate, so you'll see it's broken down into parts for each participant...

Priestess:

Since the beginning of time we have gathered in this season to celebrate the rebirth of the Sun. On the Winter Solstice - the darkest of nights the Goddess becomes the Great Mother and once again gives birth to the Sun beginning the yearly cycle anew
bringing new light and hope to all the World. On the longest night of winter flares the spark of hope the Sacred Fire, The Light of the World, We gather here to welcome the new light. As we join the Goddess in greeting the new Sun we also welcome the new light within ourselves.

Member: Hail dragons of the east, spirits of Earth, powers of Stability. I call you to lend your essence to this rite and protect us from all negativity from the east.

Member: Hail dragons of the south, spirits of Fire, powers of Will I call you to lend your essence to this rite and protect us from all negativity from the south.

Member: Hail dragons of the west, spirits of Water, powers of Emotion I call you to lend your essence to this rite and protect us from all negativity from the west.

Member: Hail dragons of the north, Air, powers of Thought I call you to lend your essence to this rite and protect us from all negativity from the north

Member: I conjure ye O Circle of Light to be a temple between the worlds. In the name of the Silver Lady and the Golden Lord. Wherefore do I bless and consecrate thee, So Mote It Be

Member: Lady, you who are the beauty of the snowy earth and the white moon among the stars, the mystery of the waters, the desire in the heart of humanity. We invite to you to come among us and attend this rite, for you are the soul of nature that gives life to the universe.

Member: Lord, You who are the freedom of the wild things, the bright sun that lights the day, the mystery of the forest, the resolve in the heart of humanity. We invite you to come among us and attend this rite, for you are the body of nature who gives life to the universe.

Member: The old solar year has run it’s course and completed it’s cycle. So too, have some of our habits or traits completed their cycles and outlived their usefulness. This is a time for shedding that which is no longer needed. Take a few moments now to consider which things you would leave behind as you go into the coming year.
(pause)
As the old year dies away so to will these old ways fade into memory.

Member: In the beginning we came from the darkness of the womb. There we were created, nourished and prepared for our birth into the light. Within us, we still carry that fertile darkness. There we hold the seeds of hopes and dreams to come. There we nourish our hopes for love, joy and peace for all. We shield these tender roots until they are strong enough to come forth and flourish in the light. Spend a little time now tending these creations to come. Name them, nurture them for they will grow with you and bloom in the coming year.
(pause)
As the sun strengthens above, so will our new ways grow.

Priestess: We light this candle for the infant Solstice Sun One small flame to pierce the darkness. A ray of hope, A symbol of the light within us all Light that can never be extinguished Light that will grow in glory waxing strong, despite the cold to come light that dispels despair and resignation giving us a glimpse of golden days ahead Behold the light that can never die reborn anew in the Solstice Sky!

Think of those who you would send positive energy to: Loved ones perhaps, those in need of healing or added strength. Perhaps people whose names you do not know, who are living with war or hunger. You may wish to focus on that which is important to you, your values, perhaps the earth itself, or the animals who share it with us. Whatever it is you wish to send your healing energy to. As you think, feel the energy of change resonate within you.

Priest: This food and wine is the blessing of the Goddess and God to our bodies. Let us partake in it freely. As we share, let us remember to share what we have with those who have nothing.
Releasing

Member: Thank you, Goddess of the Moon for attending these rites in your honor, and for sharing with us your gifts of compassion and wit. Go if you must, stay if you will Hail, and farewell.

Member: Thank you, God of the Sun for attending these rites in your honor, and for sharing with us your gifts of freedom and rejuvenation. Go if you must, stay if you will Hail, and farewell.

My "Little Dragon"

I just have to share this here...My boy started Karate Training on Tues. He's tickled pink! But, the funny thing, to me, is that he is in a group called "Little Dragons"... is that appropriate or what *grin*

Here's a few pics:
